Ulrik by Wendy L. Anderson: A Book Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Blurb: Death was the beginning of their adventure.

Drowning when his ship went down in a vicious storm, Ulrik the Viking thought it was the end. Instead, he awakens on a new and brutal Earth. Believing he was banished to this strange land by the gods as punishment, he faces the mountainous wilderness alone.

Tessa, a lonely and brokenhearted woman, dies in her sleep on her 85th birthday. She too awakens surrounded by the frightful and the unknown. Both are mysteriously thrown into new bodies facing new lives, new hopes, new dangers, and new desires.

Cast through time and other dimensions, fate has given Ulrik and Tessa a second chance at life and love. They must survive on a ruthless new world against a brutal warrior race determined to use them to conquer extinction and enter into the age of metal.  All that stands against them is ULRIK!

My thoughts: I received a free copy of Ulrik from the author for an honest review.

After reading A Cut Twice As Deep, I was extremely excited to be reading another of Anderson’s books. I did however think that there was no way Anderson could write a better story than A Cut Twice as Deep seeing as I had rated it a solid 5 out of 5 and told all my friends about it. How wrong was I?

Ulrik was INCREDIBLE!

A very unique blend of Romance, Fantasy, and Science Fiction – my three favourite genres, the author begins telling this beautifully written story by introducing us to two characters; Tessa and Ulrik. Ulrik is an 11th century Viking and Tessa is an elderly woman from the present day. After Ulrik’s ship gets lost at sea back in the 11th Century, and Tessa has a heart attack in her care home bed, both characters find themselves together in a different dimension, brought to the surface of a ‘sacred lake’ and both younger and healthier than their previous lives.

A beautiful, romantic journey begins between Ulrik and Tessa as they survive together in the beautiful mountains of this new dimension. As the story continues and their relationship develops, Ulrik and Tessa venture away from their home. This new adventure introduces new characters and epic storylines that challenges the characters and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Like the last time I read a novel by Wendy L. Anderson, I felt myself waking up and thinking about the book straight away, and taking the book out whenever was possible – walking to work (mind the lampposts), lunch break, stuck in a traffic jam on the motorway… I just couldn’t put it down. I also ended up feeling the emotions that the characters were feeling; I was becoming anxious for the characters, laughing with them and worrying about them when they were not in the chapter I was reading.

The author really has talent. The fact that Anderson is able to write an epic story filled with lovable, genuine and unique characters, is able to create a new world and describe settings so immensely it is like you are actually there, along with combining three genres perfectly, AND making the reader NEED a sequel, really does prove that the author has such unbelievable talent and a natural gift for writing.

Hands down, one of the best books I have EVER read.
